DIGITAL ANNOUNCES ALTAVISTA FORUM 2.0 -- THE NEXT GENERATION OF ONSITE WEB COLLABORATION

...New Conferencing Software Transforms Web Servers into Interactive, Team-based Environments...

MAYNARD, Mass., August 13, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today announced AltaVista Forum V2.0, a significantly enhanced version of its award-winning Internet-based Web conferencing tool. AltaVista Forum V2.0 provides many advanced OnSite conferencing capabilities for virtual workgroups and teams to collaborate and solve business problems.

With AltaVista Forum 2.0, business teams can hold "virtual" meetings over the Internet from anywhere in the world at any time, from any desktop platform with a Worldwide Web browser. Using the product's built-in security, multi-threaded discussion forums and document sharing features, members of teams can initiate conferences, collaborate in public or in private and make changes to shared documents such as presentations, spreadsheets, proposals and reports. Through post and reply conferencing, virtual team members can share ideas and poll on-line meeting attendees for group decisions in real time.

"AltaVista Forum 2.0 empowers today's businesses with the tools they need to capitalize on Internet technology to achieve their business goals, " said Ilene H. Lang, vice president of Digital's Internet Software Business Unit. "As global organizations strive to optimize their distributed Intranets, they are looking for new ways to work on the Web more efficiently. With its new team focus, AltaVista Forum greatly expands business opportunities by enhancing team communication and productivity across the entire organization on a global basis."

AltaVista Forum 2.0 also provides individuals or teams with "collaboration centers" complete with general team information, calendars and calling cards. For time-sensitive collaboration, the program supports IRC text chatting and integrates with CU-SeeMe teleconferencing software. On-line chatroom support is offered by Digital partner Web Master on Web servers running Digital UNIX.

AltaVista Forum V2.0 organizes information so teams can access data quickly and easily from anywhere on the company's Intranet. A team-specific home page provides links to each team forum and to critical information about the team and each of its members. Team members can upload information to shared Web servers from anywhere on the network. Streamlined Web e-mail allows members to send private messages and file attachments to team members or others outside the network. AltaVista Forum V2.0 also accepts news feeds from outside sources, and uses sophisticated news filters to deliver data of interest to the team.

AltaVista Forum 2.0 runs on Digital UNIX (Alpha), Windows NT (Intel and Alpha) and Sun Solaris (SPARC) systems with Microsoft, Netscape, Process Software, Apache or NCSA HTTP servers.

Individuals can access AltaVista Forum 2.0 from their PC, Macintosh or UNIX workstation using any standard Web browser. Based on the powerful and open TCL language, the program can be extended with custom scripts, shared images and DLLs - even Java applets. In addition to English, AltaVista Forum 2.0 is available in Spanish, French, German or Japanese, and provides localization to produce systems in other languages.

AltaVista Forum V2.0 ships at the end of August; a limited-time beta version is now available on AltaVista Worldwide Web Site at http:// altavista.software.digital.com. Pricing is as follows: $495 for 25 users ($495 for each additional 25 users), $3,995 for an unlimited number of users (on a 1 processor CPU) and $2,395 for each additional processor on the CPU.
