POWERFUL ALTAVISTA SEARCH TECHNOLOGY EXTENDS ONSITE COMPUTING TO PRIVATE INTRANETS

...searching for business information becomes as fast and easy as searching on the Worldwide Web...

MAYNARD, Mass. -- September 18, 1996 -- In a bold move that demonstrates the power of AltaVista’s OnSite Computing vision, Digital Equipment Corporation today announced the availability of AltaVista Search Intranet Private eXtension (PX). With this announcement, businesses can gain the same the award-winning search capabilities of AltaVista extended from the worldwide web to their private domain, making it fast and simple to find valuable business information on company intranets.

Shipping at the end of September, AltaVista Search Intranet PX operates behind corporate firewalls to index and locate terabytes of data on company web and file servers, dramatically increasing business users’ productivity. Authorized users can access AltaVista Search Intranet Private eXtension from their desktops using any popular Web browser, including Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or Netscape’s Navigator, V2.0 or higher.

"As companies expand their use of Intranet technology to help them compete in today’s global business environment, instant access to information is critical to achieving success," said Ilene H. Lang, vice president of Digital’s Internet Software Business Unit. "With AltaVista Search Intranet Private eXtension, we are making the most comprehensive Web search and retrieval capabilities available to private domains -- allowing individuals immediate access to the information they need, from anywhere at anytime."

Using the same high performance super-spider technology as Digital’s AltaVista Search Public Service, the Intranet Private eXtension crawls all of the Web servers throughout the enterprise. Every word on the private intranet is indexed and made available along with information from the public Internet. A listing of AltaVista search results is presented in seconds, and each item in the listing is hyperlinked directly to the referenced intranet or Internet source.

Future versions of AltaVista Search Intranet PX will support many popular office applications, such as word processing documents, presentation files, spreadsheets and email messages. A Software Developers Kit will be available in a later release to allow for indexing of proprietary document formats, and an Application Programming Interface will be available in the future for systems integration efforts.

AltaVista Search Intranet Private eXtension runs on 64-bit Digital AlphaServers running Digital UNIX. Two versions of the product are available: one for very-large memory (VLM) applications -- terabytes of indexed information and tens of thousands of users -- and one for non-VLM applications.
