CNET’S SEARCH.COM INTEGRATES DIGITAL’S ALTAVISTA SEARCH SERVICE WITH ENHANCED INTERFACE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and MAYNARD, MA Sept. 19, 1996 -- CNET: The Computer Network and Digital Equipment Corporation today announced the integration of Digital’s AltaVista Search Public Service into CNET’s SEARCH.COM (www.search.com) site, adding a series of features that will make the popular service easier to use. The integration of AltaVista will allow SEARCH.COM users to remain within the ad-supported SEARCH.COM environment when they view the results of their search.

CNET has simplified the SEARCH.COM AltaVista search experience, allowing users to access the power and speed of AltaVista with increased functionality. The new design features include: a separate help window that contains an easy-to-use guide of tips and hints, organized for quick reference; the capability to narrow searches; and a step-by-step process for simple and advanced searches that make refining searches quicker and easier.

"This agreement with CNET again demonstrates our intent to make AltaVista Search the standard for finding useful information on the Internet," said Ilene H. Lang, vice president of Digital’s Internet Software Business Unit. "We are extremely pleased that users of CNET’s very popular Web site can access AltaVista search results while remaining on the CNET site."

"SEARCH.COM remains committed to creating new ways for users to find the information they need in the easiest and most seamless fashion," stated Bong Suh, Vice President, Search Services for CNET: The Computer Network. "We will continue to make refinements to SEARCH.COM to fulfill its mission of being the premier Internet Search resource."

Launched in March 1996, SEARCH.COM is a highly organized collection of over 400 search tools. Free to online users, the site also provides descriptions and reviews of search tools, as well as engine-specific tips to ensure efficient searches.
