ALTAVISTA DELIVERS MAJOR SECURITY ADVANCEMENTS WITH ALTAVISTA FIREWALL 97 AND ALTAVISTA TUNNEL 97

…New Internet/Intranet Security Software Features Significantly Enhanced Management and Ease-of-Use; Strong Support For Remote Access and Virtual Private Networking…

LITTLETON, Mass. - March 10, 1997 - AltaVista Internet Software, a subsidiary of Digital Equipment Corporation, today announced significantly enhanced versions of its industry-leading Internet/intranet security products. AltaVista Firewall 97, the first active firewall, protects networks with unique evasive action technology that automatically responds to and stops network attacks. AltaVista Tunnel 97 works in conjunction with any firewall to dynamically extend intranets globally, providing remote workers with secure and cost-effective access to private networks. These products protect intranets and at the same time enable the creation of secure and cost-effective virtual private networks (VPNs) on a global scale.

"Today, network managers are under increased pressure to embrace the Internet and minimize security risks while simultaneously reducing network costs," said Ilene H. Lang, president and CEO of AltaVista Internet Software, and vice president of Digital. "With the new AltaVista Internet security products these goals can be accomplished; network managers can now use the Internet as a secure and cost-effective alternative to leased lines, 800 numbers and Remote Access Servers."

AltaVista Firewall 97
AltaVista Firewall 97, the first active firewall, keeps constant watch on the network day and night, actively deploying evasive action technology to detect and stop network attacks. The first firewall for Windows NT to receive NCSA certification, it offers maximum security, a four-tiered alarming system, evasive action, and a simple-to-use GUI. Its evasive action features are unprecedented, automatically increasing security measures on behalf of the network manager.

Other new features in AltaVista Firewall 97 include:
Secure Remote Management--AltaVista Firewall 97 offers error-proof setup through Windows 'wizards,' and secure remote management from a centralized console running either Windows 95 or Windows NT. Using AltaVista Firewall 97, system administrators can efficiently manage firewalls on numerous platforms from anywhere within the intranet or from an untrusted network. Unlike competitive offerings which establish a weak link to the firewall via a serial port or Telnet session, AltaVista Firewall 97 includes, at no additional cost, the AltaVista Tunnel for remote management.

URL and Java blocking--AltaVista Firewall 97 can block individual URLs, restricting access to specific Web pages to preserve network performance or to increase productivity. AltaVista Firewall 97 also enables system managers to detect and block Java applets entirely or allow selective Java applets through the firewall, protecting against one of the most widely experienced network attacks.

New and Enhanced Proxies--AltaVista Firewall 97 includes additional proxy support for WWW, RealAudio, UDP and SQL*net. The updated WWW proxy offers significant performance enhancements and supports HTTP, HTTPS/SSL, gopher and ftp. The RealAudio proxy allows managers to allow or prevent users on internal network systems with Web browsers to access RealAudio services on the external network. The new UDP proxy allows UDP-based applications such as Internet Chat to pass through the firewall securely, and the new SQL*net proxy permits system architects to build sophisticated, distributed networks of Oracle7 or third-party data repositories across the Internet.

AltaVista Tunnel 97
AltaVista Tunnel 97 includes improved performance, scalability, 128 bit encryption for North America and an exportable 56 bit encryption key to allow the global extension of intranets. The tunnel employs strong 512 bit authentication, encryption, data integrity and a unique firewall-independent design, providing an alternative to leased lines, modem banks and long distance dial-up access. AltaVista Tunnel 97 enables the simple, secure and cost-effective deployment of virtual private networks, extending intranet services to remote workers and branch offices.

Using AltaVista Tunnel 97 with any public Internet service provider (ISP), telecommuters, mobile workers and branch offices can easily establish secure connections to their intranet via the Internet. Compliant with any brand of firewall product, AltaVista Tunnel 97 offers increased scalability and performance on Windows NT, enhanced management features for the system administrator and strong encryption for international use.

Key new features of AltaVista Tunnel 97 include:
International Strong Encryption--In response to receiving approval to export 56-bit encryption products worldwide from the United States Department of Commerce on February 3, 1997, AltaVista offers an exportable 56 bit "strong encryption" Tunnel 97 product in addition to its 128 bit U.S.-only version. As a result, AltaVista Internet Software is the only Internet security vendor that can provide secure virtual private networking and remote access solutions for its global customers.

Increased Scalability and Performance on Windows NT--The new AltaVista Tunnel 97 supports 200 concurrent connections on Windows NT, and 512 concurrent connections on UNIX. This high degree of scalability is essential to companies with increasing numbers of telecommuters and remote workers requiring access to corporate data. AltaVista Tunnel 97 also features increased performance and reliability of tunnel connections as the product automatically attempts to re-establish the tunnel link after a network failure.

Enhanced Management Features--With AltaVista Tunnel 97, system administrators can now easily monitor real-time tunnel implementation, such as authorizing, connecting and running status. From the same GUI, they can also look at various counters such as read and write for a closer and more efficient monitoring of tunnel configurations.
