AltaVista Security Pack 97 - Technical considerations

Some MIS managers usually recommend firewalls be dedicated machines. Their recommendation is based on two factors: security and performance. Here's how AltaVista has reconciled MIS managers' concerns with the need for cost efficiencies.
Security: Having another application run on a firewall can create some security holes. AltaVista has addressed this problem by implementing a packet filter, which enables both firewall and tunnel servers to run on the same system with no compromise on security.
Performance: Performance may indeed be a factor. However, for small configurations, a Windows NT server running the AltaVista Security Pack 97 can certainly handle both firewall and tunnel traffic. These two applications generally consume CPU resources at different times. Firewalls' highest loads occur during the day, and the telecommuting peak is at night.
